José Witteveen

José Witteveen (b. 1981, The Netherlands) is an artist and photographer based in Rome. She works within the realms of photography and printmaking. Her series “Odour of Sanctity” is an ongoing project in Rome, exploring the relationship between sanctity and the growing anxiety in these times. The odour of sanctity, according to the Catholic Church, is commonly understood to mean a specific scent (often compared to flowers) that emanates from the bodies of saints. As a person not participating in any religion, the artist puts a different meaning onto the odour of sanctity. Fragments of nature which reveal themselves, now that the streets of this once overcrowded city are empty.
